Susan's Monument Bench

BY TIM WESSELS

------------------

A monument for Susan came out of a conversation I had with John Hunt shortly after she died. He said we should have a monument on the beach for Susan who swam from Sunridge Beach for 34 years. So, in February, I got in touch with Broderick at Peterborough Marble and Granite Works. I showed him some pictures of the beach, and he showed me a bench he had made. He looked for materials for the monument and found some bridge blocks (a bridge block is part of a bridge) and thought he could do something interesting with them. So we figured out how we might fashion the piece into something you can sit on and enjoy. Prior to the monument bench being installed, I dug a hole that was 14 feet long, 40 inches wide, and over 12 inches deep in the beach sand. Over the years that Susan and I gardened, I had to dig all the holes, so it was fitting that I dug this one last hole for her. On Tuesday April 30th, they started to move the pieces onto the base, and Lynda Hunt and I watched them complete the work.
